There has been talk of impeaching Donald Trump since he took office. Some people say he has clearly, at the very least, committed obstruction of justice. Now that the Democrats control the House of Representatives, there is a very real question of whether or not Trump could be impeached.
However, Trump also has his own ideas about Congressional oversight in this direction: he says he will sue Democrats if impeachment is pursued.
Washington Post reporter Ashley Parker says that Trump has been musing to his aides in the White House that if House Democrats try to impeach him, there will be a lawsuit. However, according to legal scholar Lawrence Tribe, the threats Trump is reportedly making are “idiocy.”
Tribe explained, “Not even a SCOTUS filled with Trump appointees would get in the way of the House or Senate.”
Trump’s idiocy won’t serve him well as we move through the #impeachment process. Not even a SCOTUS filled with Trump appointees would get in the way of the House or Senate, where CJ Roberts would preside over Trump’s Impeachment Trial. My book with @JoshuaMatz8 lays it all out. https://t.co/eXTCX2wFnZ

The threats are hardly necessary at this point. The idea that Trump will be impeached is just that at this point — an idea.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is adamantly opposed to the action, which is in direct opposition to progressive firebrands in the House Democratic Conference such as Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) the popular Freshman Congresswoman who won her seat by beating longtime Rep. Joe Crowley in a stunning primary challenge upset.
No one knows whether or not Trump will be impeached. That is up to House Democrats. So far, there seems to be very real concern that such an action would simply play right into Trump’s hands from a political standpoint, as we approach the 2020 presidential race with a crowded field of Democrats and a progressive base desperate for someone, anyone, to beat Donald Trump fair and square and get him out of the White House for good.
So, we will see whether Pelosi holds the line, or if the progressives in her caucus overrule her.
